Daily Prompt: Truth or Dare
Is it possible to be too honest, or is honesty always the best policy?
Photographers, artists, poets: show us TRUTH.

I think people should try to be honest, though there is a ton of grey area here. We lie to save face, to save our dignity, and to help others save their dignity. Humans are complex, even those who don’t think they are. Lying is a natural human characteristic. There’s a ton of emphasis on people always being honest. I don’t think that that is realistic or reasonable to ask from another person.
There’s things we want to share, and things we don’t. Every relationship I have is completely different. We share different aspects of ourselves with different people. I share the more intimate parts of my life with a handful of close friends and my girlfriend. I also keep some things to myself. Sometimes we have things going on in our life that we would like to keep private.
Some of the students who I work with have autism. Sometimes they will say whatever is on their mind. In many ways these students can be too honest. One boy who I was working with had a substitute assistant come into the classroom to work with him in the afternoon one day. He looked at her and screamed, “she’s a witch!” The boy proceeded to run out of the classroom screaming. I had to hold back laughter as I chased after the student. What he said was mean, but she did really look like a witch. What I try to teach the students I work with is to think about how their words and actions affect other people. Teaching empathy and emotional awareness is a lot of what I do on a daily basis.
We all share truth with one another, the only thing that varies is how much.
